Significance of color Doppler signals in benign prostatic hyperplasia: pathologic correlation
ABSTRACT
We prospectively analyzed the color Doppler signals from the genign prostatic hyperplasia in 31 patients whounderwent biplane transrectal ultrasonography and transurethral resection of the prostate. All examinations werepreformed by using a 7 MHz endorectal probe, and both color Doppler and gray scale images were obtained., Findingon color Doppler ultrasonogram were correlated with the pathologic findings. Among 21 patients who had increasedcolor signals from BPH nodules, 16 showed inflammatory changes at pathologic examination. Among 10 patients whodid not have abnormal color signals, 7 showed no evidence of inflammation. The presence of abnormal color signalsfrom BPH nodule had a sensitivity of 84.2%, a specificity of 58.3% and an accuracy of 74.2%, in predicting theassociation of inflammatory process. From our results, we may conclude that the color Doppler ultrasonography ishelful in demonstrating the associated inflammation of the prostate in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
