Efficacy and safety of automated gun biopsy under US guidance
ABSTRACT
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of automated gun biopsy with 18G needle under ultrasound guidance, weevaluated pathology reports and complications after biopsy in 24 sites of 23 patients. Biopsy was performedthrough percutaneous route in 16 patients; 11 for liver, two for lung, and one each for retroperitoneum, peritoneum and sacrum. Transrectal biopsy was performed in 8 patients ; six for prostate and two for uterus. Highquality histopathologic specimen could be obtained in 22 out of 24 cases(92%). The only complication was thesignificant bleeding, which was controlled after the conservative management, in a patient with uterinechoriocarcinoma. We conclude that automated gun biopsy under ultrasound guidance is an easy, reliable and saftmethod for the histopathologic diagnosis.
